Autumn Outing.

Coach Outing on 21 September

MHS members and their friends spent a very enjoyable day in perfect sunny weather visiting 2 special gardens in W. Sussex.

am – Sussex Prairie Gardens near Henfield. We were treated to an introductory talk by the enthusiastic owner explaining how the garden came about and was made, then positively encouraged to wander through the enormous curved herbaceous borders feeling the grasses and flowers and admiring the North American style artworks and many insects on the plants. Coffee and cakes on the terrace and plant sales added to the fun.

pm – Nymans (NT) near Crawley. The famous double herbaceous borders in the Wall Garden were absolutely stunning and the horticultural standards throughout the other parts of the gardens and woodlands were of a high standard. We took lunch here and some members took advantage of the house tours and some of the guided tour by mobility buggy through the formal gardens. Many of us rounded off our visit with ice creams – what a lovely day!

Kent Federation Success.

The Kent Federation Of Horticultural Societies  Autumn Show at Ditton Community Centre on Sunday 18th September 2016 was again a superb spectacle of all things horticultural and, during the afternoon, was enjoyed by many members of the public.  This is the “Sister” show to the KFHS Summer Show held in the Flower Tent of the County Show at Detling.

MHS, as it has done for very many years, was well represented with entries from Roger Simmons, Christine Goodey, Tricia White and Pat Grimes, gaining quite a few first, second and third places in the Vegetable, Flowers, Home Economics and Handicraft classes.

Autumn Show Review.

The Society held another successful show today.  With a large number of vegetable classes it was no surprise that Roger Simmons was the leading prize money winner. Richard Young and Pat Grimes were second and third on the prize money list.  Roger also won “The Best Vegetable Collection”, “Best Exhibit in Vegetables” and “Best Potatoes”  awards.  The “Chrysanthemum” and “Gladioli” cups went the way of Sarah Goodwin, while Penny Woodgate won “Most Points In Dahlias” and Joan Denyer won “Best Exhibit In Dahlias.

In the Floral Art section “Best Landscape” went to Sandra Roberts, “Best Exhibit In Floral Art” was won by Tricia White and Christine Goodey claimed the “Best Petite Exhibit” award.
